“Viva La Quinta Brigada” – a Christy Moore cover

One night during our recent Irish tour featured a somewhat less prestigious venue- we were just turning up and planning in a random (though lovely) pub in Liscannor.  We were having a bit of a tough time with the crowd, and Brían of Warsaw Radio did a wonderful job of winning them over by playing a fantastic cover version of “Lisdoonvarna” by Christy Moore.  It’s a bit like playing “Sweet Home Alabama” in Alabama, but it was a terrific cover, and I’ve encouraged him to playing again, now we’re back in the U.K.  Seeing hearing that song in its home setting (and the local response) was a wonderful thing, and definitely a highlight of the tour.

Last night, I found an amazing hour-long concert from Glen Hansard performing solo at the New York Met.  It closes with a great a cappella rendition of “The Parting Glass“, a traditional dating back to the 1600′s.

This led me back to Christy, and the discovery of the song I’ve covered in the video below. There are some crazy autofocus issues,  for which I must beg your indulgence.   I hope you enjoy the song:

I encourage you to read up on Frank Ryan and, indeed, Christy Moore.
